Are we there yet? Tips for a successful family road trip.

Love going on holiday but not the biggest fan of the road trip part? It doesn’t have to be that way! While the thought of being stuck in a car with a few of your favourite people might not thrill you as much as it should, with a little planning, it can be done (and you might even enjoy it).

In today’s post, we’re offering up some tips and tricks to make your family road trip smooth as can be so that you can get to your destination in no time at all (and with everyone’s nerves intact). And if that destination is Ramsgate Cottage, all the better!

Successful road trip hacks right this way

1. Keep little ones busy

A road trip can be a tiring undertaking for young children – they get bored and restless and inevitable end up grouchy and bickering. Pack safe, child-friendly activities and place them on activity boards for easy use and access. Avoid toys that might present a choking hazard or those that might cause frustration or fighting. Think colouring books, reading books, or large piece puzzles. You can also forget the toys and play car games like I Spy or Count the Cars.

2. Get the snacks right and ready

Hunger makes for irritability and multiple stops make so for a longer journey. Get your travel snacks ready and make them safe and easy to open, distribute, and eat. And don’t forget the water.

3. Bonding time coming up

Take this opportunity to talk to your family about what’s been going on in their lives and catch up without the distraction of the TV, other screens, or at-home demands. Break this up with some quiet time and some fun family music that you can all enjoy.

4. Plan your breaks ahead of time

Of course, one has to be flexible when it comes to travelling in a group but try to plan ahead when it comes to the route and to pit stops. This will help create a schedule for the day and things to look forward to en-route, as well as a chance to get out of the car, even if it’s just for a few minutes. If you have young children who still nap during the day, try to work around your nap schedule so that your little ones sleep in the car (just make sure they’re comfortable) as this can take up time and they’ll get to wake up towards the end of the trip and enjoy their destination more.

5. Happy surprises are always good

Don’t give your kids all their treats at once. Keep a few for times when it looks like the going is going to get tough. An unexpected surprise of a new toy is sure to buy you a little more time and grace. Night time travelling? Glow sticks make for a fun distraction!

However you travel, be sure to take your time, be safe, and look after yourselves. With some forethought, the journey to your destination can be fun to boot. That way you can start making memories before you even start your holiday. And, trust us, if that holiday is at Ramsgate Cottage, a successful road trip is just the start of a great family break away.
