One of the great benefits of a self-catering holiday is the freedom to eat what you want, how you want, on your own timetable. And if you’re enjoying time away in a stunning seaside spot like the surrounds at Ramsgate Cottage, all it takes is some proper planning and creative inspiration to make meal times into beautiful memories.
Celebrating a special event while on your beach holiday? Or want to add a nautical vibe to a home cooked meal on the veranda overlooking the sea (we’ve got one of those)? Then a beach themed table setting is the way to go. Start with a sea-inspired colour theme – navy blue, turquoise, and white – and make the decorations as simple or as creative as you’d like. You can even get the kids involved and make it a fun family game.
Three ideas for a beach themed table setting
1. Make some waves
Using a white tablecloth as a base, drape a turquoise table runner down the centre of your table in a style that imitates sea waves (so don’t make it too straight or stiff). Use toy sail boats (preferably painted in traditional nautical colours) to decorate the table or use napkins to make sail boats for each place setting. Small sea shell, star fish or buoy shaped candle holders and decorations will complete the maritime theme and add a little sparkle to the overall look.
2. Celebrate a fish themed feast
If the weather’s good and you can get your table onto the sand (or even outdoors), go for a fish theme. Stretch a fisherman’s net over your tablecloth or hang some fishing nets and rods on the backs of the chairs. Decorate each plate with a starfish or fish shaped napkin holders, tied with blue or white cord, and continue the theme with crockery and cutlery that uses a fish motif. You can also use glass jars or glass hurricane lamps (tied with cord or decorated with fish décor) for tea lights.
3. Shell it up
Shells can add colour and co-ordination to any maritime theme. Use them as cutlery and candle holders or as salt and pepper dispensers. For a centrepiece that’s also a candle holder, place a large pillar candle in a glass jar and then place that jar into a larger glass container, filled with sea sand and shells. Tie napkins with homemade shell necklaces or decorate the table with shells of different shapes and sizes for interest and variety. If you’re eating outdoors, another fun but practical idea is to cover drinks with flat shells.
Decorating your table for your next holiday meal can be fun and rewarding – plus it looks great too! And, if you’re going self-catering (and you really should), you have the freedom to choose any theme that takes your fancy. Want the perfect location for your next self-catering holiday?
