Ways to make your holiday cottage feel like home.

A self-catering holiday cottage is a great choice for a holiday home – you get all the freedom and beautiful surrounds of a hotel (well, at least you do with our luxury cottage by the sea!) but you can enjoy the comforts of home-style living.

However, even the most lovely and well-kitted accommodation can sometimes lack that home-from-home feeling, especially if you really you love your daily home. That’s why we’ve put together a few quick and easy ways to create that comfortable feeling only your own home can truly bring.

Five ways to make your holiday rental homely

1. Claim the kitchen

Nothing says home quite like the aromas of a delicious home cooked meal. Plan your menu, pack your slow cooker (or other favourite kitchen appliance if it’s not on the provided list) and all your favourite ingredients. The benefits of cooking for yourself while away include saving money on eating out, treating your family to their favourite dish, and enjoying the flexibility of meal times on your schedule... and the meal itself is a sure fire way to put all members of your travel party at ease.

2. Spray your favourite scent

Back to aromas but of a different nature this time. Ever noticed how your house smells just right? Take along your favourite room spritzer, scented candle, or even fabric softener, and imbue your surrounds with your favourite scent. Ahh, home sweet home smells just right.

3. Take a pic or two

Spending a substantial time away from home? Take a few framed photos with you and pop them around your rental property. It will make you feel like you belong and provide some happy memories too. Just don’t forget to pack them up and take them home again when the holiday is done.

4. Take along must-have items for instant comfort

This is a point we keep coming back to and it applies to home comforts as much as to critical health and medical items. Even in a fully furnished rental property, there are bound to be a few items missing or not quite as you would like them. Have a favourite tea mug, pillow, picnic blanket, or child’s bed time toy (or other kid essentials)? Bring it along and instantly feel more at home and as if the space is yours. Need a TV on in the background? Make sure you can enjoy your favourite shows while you’re away by checking out the tech situation beforehand.

5. Go green indoors

Always have fresh flowers at home? Or a set of potted plants? Why not add them to your holiday home? A big vase of fresh flowers gives any room an instant lift, while bringing a smile to your face. Choose your favourite flowers (just as you would at home), display them beautifully, and enjoy them every time you walk back through the door.
