A self-catering holiday with your family almost certainly means you’ll have a long packing list (we’ve got some for your next beach holiday here). And, as your family grows, your list is sure to as well.
While you might have the basics down, we’ve put together a few useful items to add to your list, especially if you’re planning on a self-catering holiday. Pack these and you’re sure to stay happier and more organised than ever before which will allow you to truly enjoy your break away from it all.
Ten useful things to pack for your next self-catering holiday
1. Washing powder
Even if you think you’ve packed enough clothes or are not planning on doing laundry while on holiday, it’s a good idea to have some washing powder on hand for those items of clothing that need to be washed immediately, for example in the case of a wine stain. Pack some of your preferred washing powder to make sure you’re happy with the results.
2. Safety pins
These little wonders aren’t just good for fixing clothing tears. Use them to close gaps in curtains or blinds, replace a missing button, secure bag zippers, seal packets, or reset electronics.
3. Ziplock bags
These plastic kitchen bags don’t take up much space and have a multitude of uses, including storing dirty clothes or toiletries (so they don’t leak all over your suitcase). They are great for carrying snacks and small items like children’s puzzles or toy cars. Plus, you can reuse them as you go.
4. Tote bag
Yes, you have your suitcase, baby bag, and handbag but what about those beach days or quick trips to the shops? A soft material tote bag can be folded into your luggage and whipped out as needed. Great for carrying your essentials, a few magazines, and a bottle of water to the beach, for example.
5. Plastic utensils
Throw a few in your luggage and beach bag for when you’re out of the house. Use them for picnic lunches, to eat yoghurt on the move, or easily spread butter on your sandwiches. Useful, lightweight, and reusable.
6. Portable power bank
If you find yourself away from your wall charger, a portable power bank will help you keep your phone alive and connected, if necessary. Small enough to store in your handbag, some versions allow you to charge more than one device at a time.
7. Reusable water bottle
Plastic or glass, a reusable water bottle is a great idea if you’re going on day trips or down to the beach. Save money and avoid unnecessary waste by bringing along a bottle that you can use again and again, and keep yourself hydrated every step of the way.
8. Band-Aids/plasters
While these may be part of your first-aid kit, many people don’t think to pack Band-Aids when going on holiday. Useful for every day scrapes and cuts, and especially after a long day of walking to help soothe any blisters.
9. Pill boxes
Not just useful for carrying your medication, pill boxes are a great choice for organising small items like earrings, hair ties, or camera memory cards.
10. Flashlight
A flashlight can be a great help when it comes to power outages, reading in the dark (when your partner is having an early night), or for looking under beds and couches for any missing items when it’s time to go home.
